You asked for it and you got it. Here is our first real-world test of the new 2025 Ram 1500 pickup truck lineup with the new 3.0-liter twin-turbo I6 Hurricane engines. I do a first 0-60 MPH acceleration in a Ram 1500 Tradesman. I show you my real-world MPG and how it tows a large 7,000 lbs trailer.
The Ram 1500 lineup is freshly updated. It has a new electrical system, new turbocharged Hurricane engine lineup, updated styling, and new technologies. I spent most of my time with the standard-output 3.0L TT I6 engine that is rated at 420 hp and 469 lb-ft of torque. This is the engine that the majority of new Ram 1500 owners will likely want to choose. The base 3.6L Pentastar V6 with eTorque is still there, but many people will likely want to spend the extra $2,695 to upgrade to the standard-output Hurricane engine.
I can tell you, this new inline-six cylinder engine is one of the smoothest engine I have ever sampled. When idling I could not tell the engine is on. When accelerating, the power comes on quickly and smoothly. I did not notice any turbocharger lag or any other lag.
I took the truck on a mixed driving loop of 41.8 miles that combined a highway stretch west of Austin Texas and some rural highways with stop signs. The truck returned a respectable 19.7 MPG. I cannot wait to put one of these trucks on our official Denver 100 standardized driving efficiency loop. I am expecting a much better result at a steady highway speed.
Is the engine powerful? Well, I did a quick 0-60 MPH acceleration test with the use of a Dragy GPS-based 0-60 MPH device. While going slightly uphill on a very dusty paved road – the truck returned 6.28 second acceleration with breaking a sweat. It is very quick. I have no doubt that this truck is capable of 5-second range acceleration in 4WD-Auto on a better paved surface. We will have to drag race it against the Ford F-150 EcoBoost at the Toyota Tundra iForce turbocharged V6 engines. The Hurricane has a chance to be the quickest.
It also tows a 7,000 lbs trailer as if it’s not even there. I am very impressed with this powertrain’s performance. It comes at a price. The well-optioned 2025 Ram 1500 Tradesman I tested has a sticker price of over $54,000. The fully-optioned Ram 1500 Laramie that I towed with has a sticker price of around $83,000. The fully-optioned 2025 Ram 1500 Rebel 4×4 truck I tested in another video also has a price of $83,000.
