Community remembers victim of deadly tow-truck shooting

46-year-old victim Steven Hughes is being remembered by his friends as funny, reliable, and an active community member.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Midlands residents who knew Steven Hughes both on-and-offline are remembering him after he was shot and killed while repossessing a car early Wednesday morning.

His friends say he was well known in the Midlands as an active supporter of various local government campaigns, an engaged community member, and the admin of a major Midlands Facebook group.

Dawn Pierce is a friend of Hughes. She met him through one of his Facebook groups.

"He liked to joke around, he was a joker. He had nicknames for everybody," said Pierce. “He looked out for people too. If he was supposed to be somewhere he would."

She says he leaves a legacy through both the people he connected with online as well. His Facebook group "Happenings in Lexington" had more than 46 thousand followers.

“I think that’s why he really loved having the Lexington page because he got to communicate with so many people because he got to joke around and that was his personality."

Raheem Jackson, the man charged in the shooting, will appear in court in June 20.
