The 2024 ESPYS are right around the corner.
Hosted by Serena Williams, the ceremony will broadcast live on July 11 and will revive memorable moments of the year, honor top-tier athletes and bring together the entire sports industry under one roof. On Wednesday, ESPN released its nominees for this year’s ceremony, and more than a few familiar faces from Texas appeared on the list.
The categories up for grabs include awards such as “Best Athlete, Men’s Sports,” “Best Athlete, Women’s Sports,” “Best Breakthrough Athlete,” “Best Record Breaking Performance,” “Best Championship Performance,” and “Best Comeback Athlete.”
For the second year in a row, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, a Tyler, Texas native and Texas Tech alumnus, is up for the “Best Athlete, Men’s Sports” award following a Super Bowl win. This year, however, one of his fellow nominees is golfer and University of Texas alumnus Scottie Scheffler, who has won six tournaments this year.
In addition, Mahomes is also up for the “Best NFL Player” award and Scheffler was added to the “Best Golfer” category.
Houston-made Olympic gymnast Simone Biles is nominated for “Best Comeback Athlete.” Biles won her 9th U.S. Championships gymnastics title this month, and after withdrawing from the team final at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, the gymnast is making her way back to the Olympic stage at the 2024 Paris Olympics in July.
The Colony, Texas, native Jayda Coleman’s walk-off home run gave Oklahoma a series-clinching 6-5 victory over Florida in the Women’s College World Series semifinals. That hit is nominated for “Best Play” in the 2024 ESPYS.
The home run gave the Sooners an opportunity to secure a fourth-straight WCWS title over the Texas Longhorns — and they did just that. Oklahoma Softball was nominated for “Best Team.”
The Texas Rangers, who clinched their first World Series title in franchise history last season, were also nominated for best team. Shortstop Corey Seager was also nominated for “Best MLB Player.” Seager won the World Series MVP Award when the Rangers won it all last year over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Although the dallas Mavericks fell short to the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Finals, Luka Dončić has the opportunity to take home a title. He was nominated for the “NBA’s Best Player of the Year” award. This past season, Dončić averaged 33.9 points, 9.8 assists and 9.2 rebounds per game.
