Hero tow truck driver honored for saving man trapped under bus

A tow truck driver was honored Tuesday by the Milwaukee Common Council for his heroic actions during a deadly crash. Back in April, a car speeding down Capitol Drive ran a red light and slammed into a Milwaukee County Transit Bus near 35th Street. The crash killed the driver of the speeding car and left seven others with injuries. Tow truck driver Tony Evans was following behind the speeding car that night. When Evans saw the crash, he immediately jumped into action pulling a woman out of the car – and then noticed a man was trapped underneath the bus. That's when Evans got back into his tow truck and used it to lift the bus off the ground, freeing the man. On Tuesday, Alderman DiAndre Jackson honored Evans for his actions with a presentation in front of the full Common Council."He got to work," said Jackson. "He didn't ask if his truck was able to lift this bus. He didn't ask if this diesel fuel I'm standing in could burst into flames. He just got it done. So with that being said, brother Evans, on behalf of the Council, you're our hero."Evans spoke to WISN 12 News about the crash in April. At that time, he said he doesn't consider himself a hero. "I don't feel like no hero or nothing like that, it's just something that anyone would have did at that time seeing all that tragedy," Evans said in April. On Tuesday, Evans remained humble. "I'd like to thank you for the award and showing me that Milwaukee does care about people taking care of people," said Evans in front of the Council. "I was really doing nothing. I was just going along with my instincts and basic skills. I was just so happy that, you know, I was there in the right place at the right time. God put me there."A few days after the crash WISN 12 News talked to the man Evans rescued. From his hospital bed, Michael Williams told reporter Nick Bohr that Evans was his guardian angel. “There was an angel by my side, and God sent that angel to protect me. And I believe that angel was Tony Evans," Williams said.
