Driver severely injured in head-on crash with truck towing excavator

CASS COUNTY, MI -- One person was severely injured in a two-vehicle crash, the Michigan State Police reports.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 1, on U.S. 12 near Gumwood Road in Cass County’s Milton Township.

An initial investigation shows the driver of a Ford F-350 pickup, with a Bobcat excavator in tow, was traveling west on U.S. 12 when the vehicle and crossed the center line and entered oncoming eastbound traffic, hitting a second vehicle head on.

The driver of the pickup, a 27-year-old Berrien Springs man, was not injured, police said.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 49-year-old Granger, Indiana, man was severely injured, MSP said.

He was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana, for advanced medical care and he is expected to survive.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor, police said, and both drivers used seat belts.

U.S. 12 was shut down for approximately five hours for cleanup. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Niles Township Fire Department , and Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service also responded. The crash remains open, pending further investigation.
