AAA concerned more people may delay filling up on gas, need roadside assistance

Gas prices have remained steady for the past week. But as it remains high, AAA is warning drivers about the dangers of running out of fuel while on the road. Watch the report in the video player above. "Our concern is that more and more people will be delaying filling up at the pump and more and more people will find themselves on the roadside needing gasoline," said Jim Garrity, with AAA East Central. Garrity said they've fielded more than 1,000 out-of-gas calls in March, which isn't terribly out of the ordinary.

However, they do anticipate the price of gas to increase as more people drive during the summer months."It's a terrible feeling," said driver Clarence Stevenson, who has run out of gas a few times in his life. "It's all unexpected. When it dies, it's usually in the middle of traffic." Garrity said running out of gas can also mean mechanical trouble for your vehicle." You're putting components of your vehicle, like your fuel pump, in position for potentially expensive repairs," he said. AAA advises the best way to save money on gas is to slow down. "You burn gas far less efficiently, according to AAA data, every 5 miles per hour over 50 that you drive," Garrity said. "And for what? To get you to your destination a couple minutes earlier? There's no advantage to speeding."
