AAA activates 'Tow to Go' to prevent drunk driving

MADISON, Wis. — AAA is activating "Tow to Go" to prevent impaired drivers on the road during the St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

The service is free for both AAA members and non-members

When someone calls the “Tow to Go” line, AAA will dispatch tow trucks to transport the impaired driver and their vehicle to a safe location within a 10-mile radius over St. Patrick’s Day. Rides are confidential. 

“Tow to Go” is active from 6 p.m. Friday, March 15, 2024, to 6 a.m. Monday, March 18, 2024. 

AAA asked that the free service be treated as a last resort. Rides are limited to one person. 

The “Tow to Go” program has removed more than 30,000 impaired drivers from the road since its inception.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), St. Patrick’s Day is one of the deadliest holidays on U.S. roadways. In 2020, more than 11,000 people died in drunk-driving crashes. 

“We’re proud to be that last line of defense, keeping people from driving impaired,” said Nick Jarmusz, director of public affairs, AAA in a press release. “We also remain committed to educating the public that it’s important to find a safe ride before drinking alcohol or taking drugs. This is critical so motorists are not in the position of having to decide if they’re sober enough to drive.”

Appointments cannot be scheduled in advance to use “Tow to Go.” AAA said people should always choose a designated driver before celebrating.

“Tow to Go” may not be available in rural areas or during severe weather.

To get a ride, call the “Tow to Go” line at 855-286-9246. Service areas include Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, North Dakota, Nebraska, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Additional service areas include Denver, Colorado; Charlotte, North Carolina; Fort Wayne, Indiana and South Bend, Indiana.
