B.C. man, 19, seriously hurt in crash with SUV while being towed on a toboggan

A 19-year-old man was taken to Kelowna hospital with significant injuries after being struck by an SUV while being towed behind a truck on a toboggan.

Lake Country RCMP say the crash last week was clearly preventable, and warned others to play safely in the snow.

RCMP Cpl. Ryder Birtwistle said in a release Wednesday the man was being towed by a Ford F150 along Oyama Road near Broadwater Road at a speed of about 30 km/h.

An SUV approaching from the other direction tried to avoid the toboggan as it drifted into its lane, but the man hit the rear of the vehicle.

The pickup driver was ticketed for driving without due care, which comes with a $368 fine and six demerit points.

“This incident could easily have ended in tragedy and was entirely avoidable,” said Birtwistle. “Please enjoy the snow in the safest possible manner and help us maintain road safety, especially during challenging driving conditions.”
