Arizona declares June 23-29 as Roadside Assistance Worker Appreciation Week

AAA Arizona celebrates this busy summer travel week by reminding motorists of Arizona’s Move Over law, which requires drivers to reduce their speed and, when safe, move over to the next lane upon encountering any vehicle with flashing lights pulled to the side of the roadway. Violators face financial penalties. AAA estimates that it will respond to nearly 800,000 calls for roadside assistance nationwide over the upcoming Fourth of July travel period alone, which is 5% more than last year.

Each day, Arizona roadside assistance workers come to the rescue of motorists in need. AAA Arizona extends its gratitude to these dedicated drivers who respond to almost 600,000 calls in Arizona each year. In recognition of their hard work, Gov. Katie Hobbs recently proclaimed June 23-29 as Roadside Assistance Worker Appreciation Week.

Summer is the busiest time for AAA’s roadside assistance teams across the country. AAA estimates that it will respond to nearly 800,000 calls for roadside assistance nationwide over the upcoming Fourth of July travel period alone, which is 5 percent more than last year.

“Drivers can show their appreciation for tow truck drivers by adhering to Arizona’s Move Over Law,” said Dan Hutchinson, chief roadside officer for AAA Arizona. “With the busy summer driving season underway, it’s important that we remember to give our roadside heroes the safe space they need to help stranded motorists on the side of the road.”

Arizona’s Move Over law requires drivers to reduce their speed and, when safe, move over to the next lane upon encountering any vehicle with flashing lights pulled to the side of the roadway. Violators face financial penalties.

In recognition of Roadside Assistance Worker Appreciation Week, June 23-29, AAA Arizona encourages drivers to:

Stay alert, avoid distractions and concentrate on the task of driving.

Watch for situations where emergency vehicles, tow trucks, public service vehicles or disabled vehicles on the side of the road.

Slow down and, if possible, keep one lane away from workers, motorists and their vehicles stranded on the side of the road.

Credit Cards with Roadside Assistance: What to Know

Dealing with an emergency, like a flat tire or a dead battery, when you’re on the road can be distressing and expensive to resolve. Even if you don’t have a AAA membership, you may have access to a roadside assistance program if you have a credit card that offers this perk.

Here’s what you need to know about credit cards with roadside assistance.

What is roadside assistance?

Roadside assistance (also known as roadside dispatch) is a service that helps individuals with a roadside emergency such as a dead battery, flat tire, running out of gas, mechanical failure and more. This service is available through motor clubs, like AAA, certain credit cards (i.e. Chase Sapphire Reserve®) or travel insurance policies, such as from Allianz, and can be used for your own vehicle or on a car rental.

Generally, roadside assistance services available through membership clubs like AAA, are comprehensive than those provided for free on your credit card.

The best credit card with roadside assistance

Credit cards offer differing forms of roadside assistance, ranging from a complimentary benefit to a pay-per-use service. Some travel credit cards with high annual fees include roadside assistance as a complimentary benefit that can be used several times a year. Low-fee or no-fee credit cards may offer roadside dispatch as a service that you pay for each time you need to use it.

Chase Sapphire Reserve®

NerdWallet rating

NerdWallet's ratings are determined by our editorial team. The scoring formula incorporates coverage options, customer experience, customizability, cost and more.

Here are the card's roadside assistance benefits:

Jump-starting the car with a battery boost when the car won’t start.

Tire changing in case you get a flat tire (must have an inflated spare).

Fuel delivery up to two gallons.

24-hour towing assistance from Chase’s network of over 25,000 service providers across the U.S. and Canada.

24-hour lockout assistance, so if you get locked out of a car, a qualified locksmith will be dispatched to unlock the vehicle. The key replacement cost is not included.

Each incident is covered up to $50 and the benefit can be used four times per year while traveling in the U.S. and Canada. The perk applies to cardholders driving a car or truck (subject to weight limit) but commercial vehicles are excluded. Assistance is available 24/7/365 by calling the Cross Country Motor Club hotline at 866-860-797.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve®, which has an annual fee of $550 has the following welcome offer: Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $900 toward travel when you redeem through Chase Travel℠. In addition to free roadside assistance, these premium Visa cards have a number of other benefits, making them excellent companions for those who use their services.

How Chase cards work with roadside dispatch

Cardholders of Chase’s low-fee and no-fee Visa credit cards receive these services for an additional fee while traveling in the U.S. and Canada:

Flat tire changes as long as the cardholder has a good, inflated spare tire.

Jump-start to boost the car battery.

Lockout service but a key replacement isn't included.

Fuel delivery of up to five gallons (cost of fuel not included).

Winching within 100 feet of paved or county-maintained roads.

Although these benefits aren’t as exhaustive as those provided on the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, they can still come in handy if you’re stranded on the side of the road. You will receive coverage on any vehicle as long as its 10,000 pounds or less. Assistance is available 24/7/365 and can be reached by calling 800-847-2869.

Cards providing roadside dispatch:

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (annual fee: $95): Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $750 when you redeem through Chase Travel℠.

🤓Nerdy Tip

Credit card offers change periodically, so if you’ve got your eye on a certain credit card, keep track of its welcome offer in case a stronger bonus becomes available.

Non-Chase credit cards with roadside assistance

Bank of America, Capital One and Wells Fargo are some of the other credit card issuers that offer roadside assistance benefits for a fee. In addition, all Visa Signature cards include roadside dispatch service. Refer to each card’s benefits guide or call customer service for a full list of the exact benefits offered.

Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card (annual fee: $0): Earn 20,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months - that's a $200 cash redemption value.

Note: AmEx and Citi formerly offered roadside assistance on certain credit cards, however the benefits are no longer available.

Credit card roadside assistance vs. AAA and travel insurance

If you don’t have a credit card that provides roadside assistance/dispatch or your vehicle type is excluded from coverage, you can still receive this service by purchasing a membership with an automobile club, like AAA or a travel insurance policy for when you’re on vacation.

AAA offers several roadside assistance programs with varying levels of coverage for different kinds of cars. AAA’s higher membership levels include increased limits and more coverage options. AAA memberships offer a wide range of perks including discounts on hotels, restaurants and attractions and can be a great option for those who don't have roadside coverage through their card.

Travel insurance plans can also include roadside assistance benefits, sometimes as part of the policy and at other times as an optional upgrade.

Other benefits for your road trip

If you’re undecided about getting a membership with AAA or a credit card that offers roadside assistance, it's important to consider the other benefits you may want.

The cards above offer a slew of other perks that can be useful on your road trip. For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers 3x on points at restaurants and a DashPass subscription, which you can use to save money when ordering food online while you’re traveling within the U.S. Cardholders also have access to the Visa Infinite Concierge Service, which assists with ticket requests to music and sporting events and dinner reservations.

Another example, the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card offers 3x points per dollar at gas stations and restaurants (order in or take out).

If you're considering a credit card with emergency roadside assistance ...

Roadside assistance is an important credit card benefit that can help you if you’re stuck on the side of the road. Many credit card issuers offer this perk so you don’t necessarily need a AAA membership to have access to these benefits.

The information related to the Chase Slate®, Chase Freedom® and Chase Freedom® Student has been collected by NerdWallet and has not been reviewed or provided by the issuer of this card.

Can Electric Car Owners Benefit from Roadside Assistance?

The demand for electric vehicles is surging in 2024. The International Energy Agency reports that 40 million cars in the world are electric vehicles. This may not sound like a lot, but the proportion of cars that are electric is growing rapidly. Around one in five vehicles that were sold in 2023 were electric.

As more people buy electric vehicles, they are starting to discover some of the complications. One of the biggest issues is that they have to worry about getting roadside assistance when breaking down. Fortunately, roadside assistance is available to people that use electric vehicles. Therefore, electric vehicle owners may want to consider getting roadside assistance cover. This means you don’t have an excuse not to switch to an electric car to help the planet!

Electric Vehicle Owners Can Benefit from Roadside Assistance Coverage

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, the last thing anyone wants is to be helpless on the road due to a car breakdown. Whether it’s a flat tire, battery jumpstart, or simply running out of fuel, such situations can quickly turn into a nightmare without the right assistance. That’s where roadside assistance cover comes into play for swift help when you need it the most.

Many electric vehicle owners are using roadside assistance. Time reports that AAA offered roadside assistance to 160,000 electric vehicles last year alone.

Understanding roadside assistance cover

Roadside assistance cover, often referred to as roadside cover, is an optional add-on to your car insurance. Roadside assistance cover extends the protection to include assistance during roadside emergencies while your car insurance protects you financially in case of accidents, theft or damage.

Key benefits of roadside assistance cover

Below are some of the key benefits of having roadside assistance add-on cover:

24/7 Emergency assistance: One of the most important advantages of roadside assistance cover is access to 24/7 emergency help. A simple phone call can summon assistance to your location whether you’re alone in the night or during rush hour traffic.

towing services: Roadside assistance cover includes towing services upto 50 kms to take your vehicle to the nearest repair shop or mechanic if your vehicle is immobilised due to a breakdown, saving you the hassle and expense of arranging transportation for your car.

Flat tyre assistance: Changing a flat tyre can be challenging, especially if you’re not familiar with the process or lack the necessary tools. With roadside assistance cover,  a vehicle technician will be arranged to replace the flat tyre with the spare tyre at the location of the breakdown or arranging the flat tyre to the nearest place of repair and delivering the tyre back to the place of breakdown in case a technician cannot be arranged.

Fuel delivery: Running out of fuel is a mishap that can occur when you least expect it. Roadside assistance add-on cover often includes fuel delivery services upto 5 liters, ensuring you’re not helpless due to an empty tank.

Battery jump-start: A dead battery can leave you alone, unable to start your car. Roadside assistance cover offers jump-start services, with a technician arriving promptly to jump-start your car and get you moving again.

Arrangement of keys: Accidentally locking your keys inside your car is frustrating, but it doesn’t have to ruin your day. Roadside assistance add-on cover provides arrangement of keys, to regain access to your car without causing any damage.

Choosing the right roadside assistance cover

When selecting a roadside assistance add-on cover for your car insurance, it’s crucial to consider several factors to ensure you get the level of protection you need:

Coverage limits: Check the coverage limits and restrictions of the roadside assistance add-on cover to ensure they meet your requirements.

Cashless network garages: Research cashless network garages associated with network providers to ensure they have a broad coverage area, especially if you frequently travel long distances or in remote areas.

Cost: It’s important to find a plan that offers good value for your money while price shouldn’t be the sole determining factor.

Conclusion

Don’t wait until you’re helpless on the road to realis the importance of roadside assistance add-on cover—make sure you’re covered before you hit the road. With roadside assistance cover, you can drive with confidence, knowing that help is just a phone call away. You should also know that electric vehicles are eligible for roadside assistance coverage, which is one other reason to consider making the switch to them. Chase Sapphire Preferred & Sapphire Reserve Roadside Assistance

The spontaneity of a road trip is part of the appeal. Whether you’re driving from point A to point B or slowly making your way across our great country, anything can happen during the journey. Unfortunately, an unexpected event could also include getting stranded on the side of the road due to a breakdown, flat tire, or the potentially embarrassing moment of running out of gas (gorgeous scenery can be so distracting).

Regardless of the reason for your trip, you won’t want to wait until you’re stranded on the side of the road to know which of your credit cards offers the best roadside assistance.

Roadside assistance card benefits can vary significantly. For example, many cards are equipped with a benefit that offers a basic dispatch referral service, that can simply dispatch a vendor to make the service call. Or, you might find card coverage that offers a service call package for which you’ll pay a set fee.

We’ve previously written about roadside assistance and which cards offer the best coverage but today we’re going to expand on the benefit that comes with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and on the Chase Sapphire Reserve®.

You’ll find that the coverage offered on our 2 featured cards goes above and beyond the basic dispatch service, but benefits do differ by card. Stay tuned while we look closely at the roadside assistance benefit that comes with these cards and how each one works.

What Is Roadside Assistance Coverage?

Flat tireRoadside assistance can help turn a bad day into a mere inconvenience. Image Credit: Bernd Dittrich via Unsplash

Credit cards come with all sorts of travel benefits of which roadside assistance, in various levels of coverage, is commonly found. Roadside Dispatch, Roadside Protection, Roadside Assistance, and Premium Roadside Assistance are common terms used for these different levels of coverage. However, the name given to the coverage does not indicate the benefit level you’ll receive, as this differs by card issuer.

For example, Roadside Dispatch may mean that you are provided with a toll-free number that can be used 24/7 to call for referral services to help locate and schedule a service provider. The cardholder would be responsible for the costs of all services received.

Or Roadside Dispatch coverage could mean that you have 24/7 access to a dispatch line that will dispatch a vendor to make the service call, however, you may be charged a flat pre-negotiated fee that will cover a select list of provided services. Any services above and beyond the included services would be the responsibility of the cardholder.

Yet another level of roadside assistance coverage (the name can vary) could include a benefit of a set amount, $50 for example, that is applied to the cost of a service call. You’ll call a toll-free number and a service provider will be dispatched to assist you. Any services beyond the maximum dollar amount per service call benefit are the responsibility of the cardholder.

Roadside assistance benefits can include lockout service, tire changing, emergency fuel delivery, jump-starting, towing, winching, and more.

There are variations of these definitions and even combinations, but generally, these are the levels of roadside assistance you’ll find provided on credit cards.

With this information as a foundation, let’s move on to look at the levels of coverage provided on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and Chase Sapphire Reserve card.

Bottom Line: Card issuers use different names for roadside assistance coverage and benefit levels will vary. Your card’s specific Guide to Benefits will have the full benefit description, how to use the service, exclusions, and the terms and conditions for coverage.

How Chase Roadside Assistance Works

Young woman looking out car windowHave peace of mind knowing help is on the way with just 1 call. Image Credit: cottonbro via Pexels

Let’s look at how roadside assistance coverage works on both of our featured cards.

Chase Sapphire Preferred Card

The Roadside Dispatch coverage that comes with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card is an automatic pay-per-use benefit requiring no pre-registration:

Make The Call — When you call 800-847-2869, you will need to provide your name, location, and problem details.

Service Provider Assignment — While you are on the phone, a service provider will be dispatched. You will be informed of the applicable fee (currently $59.95) for the service call.

Payment — You will be expected to pay for the service call at the time of dispatch, plus any additional fees. For example, if you need towing for more than 5 miles, you will be charged for the additional cost.

Services Received — If you receive services on-site that are not included in the standard benefit, your card will be charged for these services.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Card

The Roadside Assistance coverage that comes with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card covers 4 service calls each year — 1 service call within a 7-day period for the same cause, up to a maximum of $50 per event. Like Roadside Dispatch service, there is no need to preregister. Here’s how the coverage works:

Make The Call — When you call 866-860-7978, you will provide your name, location, vehicle identification number, and problem details.

Service Provider Assignment — A service provider will be dispatched while you are on the phone.

Payment — In most cases, when there are no additional services provided beyond those included in the service call, you can just sign and drive at the time of service.

Services Received — If services are provided beyond those included in the service call benefit, the additional cost will be charged to your associated card.

You are covered as a cardholder for a car you own or lease and for a car that is furnished to you by the owner while traveling away from home.

Hot Tip: You’ll find Roadside Dispatch service offered on Chase Visa credit cards, including the Chase Freedom Unlimited®. Master Roadside Assist is available on select Mastercards such as the Chase Freedom Flex℠.

Everything Else You Need To Know

Roadside assistance may not be available in remote or off-road areas. Commercial vehicles are not eligible for coverage. The dedicated roadside assistance service line is open 24/7.

If you’re driving a rental car and break down, you should call the rental car agency, not Chase roadside assistance. The rental car agency will have its own service provider.

Trucks that carry more than 2,000 pounds are excluded on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card.

Services are provided by Cross Country Motor Club on both featured cards.

Final Thoughts

It’s not often we run out of gas, break down on the side of the road, or lock ourselves out of our vehicle, but when it happens it’s good to know that 1 simple phone call could resolve the issue.

My car battery died unexpectedly at midnight in the winter, during a snow storm, at the airport. I neglected to even think of using my card until after the fact. Fortunately, I was able to get a jump-start for my vehicle from a stranger across the parking lot, but using my Chase Sapphire Reserve card’s Roadside Assistance benefit would have certainly been less stressful.

Knowing the coverages available to you on your credit cards can save you money and help avoid further headaches. Roadside assistance is an example where very little effort can accomplish both.

Unlike many travel insurance coverages that come with our credit cards, roadside assistance does not require you to file a claim or submit supporting documents. You simply call, receive the service, and you’re on your way. And, that’s a win-win.
