Weekend roundup: Area events include monster truck show, 'Clue' performance, circus at Temple Mall, live music and more | Entertainment

Monsters will take flight this weekend in Belton as the Cadence Bank Center hosts the annual No Limits Monster Truck and Thrill show. Other events this weekend in Central Texas include performances of “Clue” at Lake Belton High School, the annual Arches Resolution 5K run, a gun show, live music and more.

No Limits monster truck show

The annual No Limits Monster Truck and Thrill show will take place this weekend at the Cadence Banks Center, 301 W. Loop 121 in Belton.

Show times are 7 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday.

The show will include performances from several monster trucks, including Thrill Billy, King Krunch, Nitro Hornet, Geronimo, Higher Education and Outlaw Wrangler, the mud-slinging, car-crushing Jeep.

Higher Education is a jacked-up four-wheel drive school bus that catches big air inside the Cadence Bank Center.

The show will include a death-defying Harley motorcycle jump by Ed Beckley, CEO of No Limits.

“The last time I jumped in Belton was 2015 and the building was sold out,” he said. “This year, I’m going to make the jump with a shapely gal on the back of my bike,” Beckley, 73, said.

Another popular feature, the children’s Power Wheel races, also will return.

“People bring their little battery-powered cars — like a Barbie Jeep or Corvette — and race them,” Beckley said.

Power Wheel contestants are limited to 3- to 9-year-olds and they are separated into classes depending on how the machines are powered.

“We have a 6- to 12-volt class and a 24- to 36-volt class,” Beckley said. “The kids like to dress up in costumes and have fun, and their families are encouraged to get down on the track and cheer them on.”

Parents can call 940-683-4742 to register a child.

A second event for local participants is the Hooligan Mini Bike races.

“These are the little bikes with big fat tires,” he said. “They are the new go-karts. They are fun and competitive, and they are a blast to watch.”

Participants may call 940-683-4742 for details or to register for the mini bike races.

This year’s show will include the Tuff Truck competition.

“It’s a mud race where you bring the vehicle,” Beckley said. “It can be an old truck or your future ex-wife’s car. Actually, sometimes the future ex-wife brings her future ex-husband’s truck and buries it in the mud.”

The Premiere Gun Show will take place this weekend in the assembly hall at the Cadence Bank Center in Belton.

The show will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The show will include a variety of vendors selling guns, ammo, reloading supplies, knives and more.

Admission is $10 per person.

The annual Arches Resolution 5K run will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday along Pepper Creek Trail. The start and finish line for this year’s run will take place at the soccer complex at Crossroads Park, 6600 Research Loop in Temple.

Registration is $30 and available online at racetemple.com. Race-day registration will be available starting at 9 a.m.

The Lake Belton High School Theatre department will present performances of “Clue” on stage at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the school’s performing arts center, 9809 FM 2483 in Temple.

The show, a comedic who-dunnit based on the 1985 Paramount film and classic Hasbro board game, follows six mysterious guests who meet at a remote mansion for a dinner party. When their host turns up dead, they all become suspects. The characters include the butler Wadsworth, Professor Plum, Miss Scarlet, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock and Colonel Mustard.

The Camp Hearne World War II historic site and exhibit will hold a special event on Saturday at 12424 Camp Hearne Road in Hearne.

The activity is titled “Das Kaserne,” which translates to “The Barracks.”

The activity is a “prisoner of war escape experience that invites participants to step back in time and uncover challenges faced by prisoners behind barbed-wire fences during World War II,” event organizers said in a news release.

Groups will be immersed in a 30-minute challenge, navigating through historical objects, crafted replicas, hidden codes and clues, all aimed at unlocking the secrets to a successful escape from the camp.

Teams must include a minimum of two players and maximum of eight participants age 14 and older. Time slots are available at noon, 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. Participation costs $20 per player. To secure a spot, visit camphearne.com/thebarracks.

The Do Portugal Circus is coming to the Temple Mall this weekend.

Performances will be offered at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Sunday.

The shows will feature acrobatic performances and death-defying stunts.

General admission tickets are $15 and VIP tickets, featuring ringside seats, are $25. For information and tickets visit www.doportugalcircususa.com.

First 100% American Made Electric Fire Truck Enters Service In Mesa, Arizona

E-One, based in Ocala, is a full spectrum builder of fire apparatus and is a pioneer and recognized leader in extruded aluminum and stainless steel construction. Recently, it has introduced Vector — the first American made all electric fire truck. On its website, E-One says,”Energize your firefighting capabilities and protect your crews and the environment from air and noise pollution with Vector, the first North American style fully electric fire truck. With the most powerful, longest lasting battery performance on the market, this truck drives and pumps on electric power only — able to conduct 100% of ground duties with 100% electric. Customizable to meet your needs, Vector answers the call with cleaner, quieter operation.”

The Vector uses 800 volt architecture and is equipped with a 327 kWh battery pack that powers a 400 kW (536 hp) electric motor which in turn powers either the rear axle or the pump system. When working the pump, the motor can quickly drain the truck’s 530 gallon onboard water and foam tank. When hooked to a water supply, the pumper can spray a maximum of 1,250 gallons per minute, or run 750 gallons per minute through four hoses for four hours on a full charge. E-One says this is “the longest electric pumping duration in the industry.” The Vector electric fire truck can accept up to 120 kW of charging power, enough to recharge the battery pack in 3.5 hours.

Courtesy of E-One

The first Vector electric fire truck from E-One is now in service, part of the Mesa Fire and Medical Department Station 221 in Mesa, Arizona. According to Autoblog, Los Angeles took delivery of a European style electric fire truck in May 2022 built by Austrian company Rosenbauer and called the RTX. The Rosenbauer truck is not fully electric however. It has two battery packs with a total capacity of 132 kWh. It also has a 3.0 liter BMW 300 horsepower inline six cylinder engine to replenish the two Volvo Penta batteries. Think of it as a really, really big BMW i3.

The E-One Vector fire truck is powered solely by its battery pack. It can be fitted with an optional internal combustion engine to supply electricity to keep the battery pack charged during extended pumping operations. It can also make sure the fire truck is available during extended grid outages or natural disasters and can increase the maximum flow rate of water to 1,500 gallons a minute for as long as their is fuel to operate it.

The Economics Of Fire Trucks

The Rosenbauer RTX fire truck purchased by Los Angeles cost $1.2 million. Mesa authorities declined to say what the Vector cost but noted the money to buy it came from a voter approved bond issue in 2018 and the city’s general fund. If you think that’s a lot of money, sit down. You may be shocked to learn that $1.2 million is not out of line with current prices for traditional diesel-powered pumper fire trucks thanks to remarkable inflation over the past three years, which has been even wilder than for the traditional car market.

A fire department in Sudbury, Ontario, purchased three pumper trucks in 2020 for $788,010 CAD ($590.000 USD) per truck. In 2022 and 2023, the city council approved buying two more pumper trucks for a combined price of $1.7 million CAD ($1.2 million USD). When the city council finally put out the tenders and got them approved in late 2023, the price of each truck was $1.46 million CAD ($1.1 million USD).

A similar thing happened in Connecticut last year. The Norwalk Fire Department expected to pay a total of $1.35 million for two fire trucks in 2022, but by the time it was ready to move forward with the purchase in 2023, the price had risen to $1.84 million. Not only that, the waiting time for delivery went from the usual nine to 12 months to two or three years.

Since the Rosenbauer RTX has been in service in Los Angeles, it has operated almost exclusively in battery electric mode. In the initial six months of service, it used only battery power for 99% of its calls. When calculated for all operations including training, that statistic was 98.2%. Estimates for the current year of operation that ends in March figure a minimum of 96% pure electric operation in all phases of use. Mesa bought its electric fire truck as part of efforts to be carbon neutral by 2050, and as the Vector is all-electric, it should be even higher than L.A.’s high standard when comparing vehicle emissions.

The Takeaway

The quest for those who wish to see emissions from the transportation sector reduced is to retire the diesel engine from service. Not only is that important for the Earth, fire fighters are challenged all the time by air that is unfit to breathe. The last thing they need is more pollution entering their lungs on their way to and from a fire. The Vector electric fire truck is another step forward for a cleaner environment and a more sustainable planet.

Driverless truck companies plan to ditch human co-pilots in Texas in 2024

Driverless trucks with no humans on board will soon cruise Texas highways if three startup firms have their way, despite objections from critics who say financial pressures, not safety, is behind the timetable.

After years of testing, Aurora Innovation, Kodiak Robotics and Gatik AI expect to remove safety drivers from trucks that are being guided by software and an array of sensors including cameras, radar and lidar, which sends pulses of light that bounces off objects. The companies have already hauled cargo for big names such as Walmart Inc., Kroger Co., FedEx Corp. and Tyson Foods Inc.

“At the end of the year, we anticipate getting to the point where we begin operating those trucks without drivers on board,” Chris Urmson, co-founder and chief executive officer of Pittsburgh-based Aurora, said in an interview.

All of the companies say they’re ready to deploy the technology, though they know there’s little-to-no margin for error. The risk is worth it, they say, because the technology promises to improve highway safety and lower transportation costs.

Detractors say the companies have incentive to reduce the losses that investors have been financing during the development and testing phase.

“We are concerned about the lack of regulation, the lack of transparency, the lack of comprehensive data collection,” said Cathy Chase, president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety. The list of opponents also includes the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the 1.3 million member union that represents drivers and warehouse workers.

And trucks pose severe dangers, opponents say, because they will be traveling at highway speeds and weigh as much as 80,000 pounds, or more than 15 times as much as General Motors Co.’s troubled Cruise driverless robotaxi.

The federal government for now has left regulation of driverless large trucks mostly up to states, creating a patchwork of rules. California suspended Cruise operations in October after several incidents in San Francisco. California’s lack of rules for allowing trucks to be tested on public roads encouraged the three driverless truck firms and others to turn to Texas for testing and deployment.

The difficulties that Cruise’s robotaxis faced on the streets of San Francisco — unpredictable pedestrians, sudden road closures and emergency vehicles — are less of a problem for driverless trucks, according to the companies. Trucks largely move cargo on fixed routes and mostly on highways that require much less interaction with passenger vehicles and pedestrians.

Besides saving on trucker pay, the trucks can travel longer than the 11-hour limit now on human drivers. The sensors scan in all directions several times a second to identify objects, speeding up reaction time. There are even estimated savings on emissions of 10% or more because the vehicles will stay just below the speed limit and travel at a steady cadence, the companies say.

And human drivers don’t guarantee safe operations. In 2021, 5,700 large trucks, which weigh 10,001 pounds or more, were involved in fatal crashes, according to statistics compiled by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. A majority of those incidents came from trucks with a gross weight of 33,001 pounds or more. These so-called Class 8 trucks are similar in size to those in Kodiak and Aurora fleets.

While driverless trucks haven’t had any at-fault incidents with other vehicles in testing with safety drivers, the FMCSA report suggests that they may not be immune to accidents. Nearly two-thirds of fatal accidents occur when a person, object, animal or other vehicle veers into a truck’s lane. Data collected by a self-driving truck’s computer system will be key to determining what caused an accident.

“They can’t just say we’re better than humans,” said Brian Ossenbeck, a transportation industry analyst with JPMorgan Chase, of the companies planning to go driverless this year. “They have to reach that superhuman level, at least initially, until there’s broader acceptance. And who knows how long that would take.”

Meeting the goal

At Aurora’s terminal just south of Dallas, a worker cleans sensors on top and at the side of a dark blue Peterbilt truck while a safety driver sits in the cab ready for the truck to pull out. If all goes as planned, the safety driver, whose hands now hover above the wheel without touching it while the truck is in transit, will soon no longer be needed for the 200-mile trek to Houston.

“Our intent is this is going to feel like just another day, except this day the truck’s going to head out on the road without anybody in it,” said Urmson.

Wall Street will be watching closely to see if Aurora meets its goal of going driverless by the end of 2024, said Jeff Osborne, an analyst with TD Cowen, who has a “market perform” rating on the stock. Otherwise, investors will raise cash-burn concerns, he said.

“If something is slightly delayed, you just end up getting punished,” Osborne said.

The startup raised $850 million this summer, giving it enough cash to operate through the second half of 2025. Aurora then aims to raise a similar amount to carry it through 2027, when it’s expected to turn a profit, Urmson said.

Gatik AI, a Mountain View, California-based startup, has already driven trucks without a driver in Arkansas and Canada. The company uses smaller, box trucks and plans to deliver from distribution centers to stores. In 2024, the company expects to deploy driverless trucks in the Dallas area “at scale,” said Gautam Narang, Gatik’s co-founder and CEO, in an interview.

Kodiak plans to “start small in 2024 and gradually ramp it up as we build confidence in the system that we didn’t miss anything,” said Don Burnette, CEO of the closely held Mountain View, California-based company that he founded in 2018. “We’ve seen the damage that can be done,” as in the case of robotaxis in San Francisco, he said.

The first operations without a human aboard will be short runs near the company’s truck terminal just south of Dallas and extend from there, said Burnette.

The companies have truckport partners to help with refueling their diesel-powered fleets and roadside assistance in case of a flat tire.

Open road

For now, it’s mostly southern states – from Arizona to Florida – that allow self-driving trucks. Kodiak has been hauling cargo with a safety driver from Dallas to Atlanta and from Houston to Oklahoma City. Most companies plan to start in the south because there’s less inclement winter weather.

Texas first adopted legislation allowing driverless trucks in 2017. State authorities have worked with the startups to address issues such as inspections and how law enforcement will interact with a driverless truck.

“Autonomous vehicles are expected to help improve safety, spur economic growth and improve the transportation experience for all Texans,” the Texas Department of Transportation said in a statement.

Still, the self-driving startups realize that state and federal regulators “have the ability to force a recall and stop the operation of vehicles if they believe they’re creating unreasonable risk to the motoring public,” Urmson said. The potential transformation of the trucking industry will depend on whether the initial driverless runs are completed without a hitch.

Video of Anchorage garbage truck driver chasing moose sparks outrage

Alaska wildlife authorities said they’re investigating a potential wildlife harassment incident after a video surfaced on social media over the holiday weekend of a garbage truck chasing a moose down an Anchorage neighborhood street.

Northern Waste, the waste-hauling company that owns the truck, launched an internal investigation after it received the video of the encounter from the person who recorded it on Friday, said Sara Jost, who handles business development and community outreach for the company.

The incident was a first for the 7-year-old company, which quickly terminated the “rogue employee” who was the sole operator of the truck, she said. It plans to provide additional wildlife training for drivers in the future, she said in an interview Tuesday.

“We have a zero-tolerance policy for recklessness and hazing of wildlife,” said Jost.

“We were disgusted by this one person’s bad decision and in our eyes we took the highest level of disciplinary action promptly,” she said. “We’re committed to the highest level of safety and respect to our community, neighbors and wildlife.”

Jost said the video was originally posted on the Nextdoor site Friday. The incident appears to have occurred in the Bayshore/Klatt neighborhood off the Seward Highway in South Anchorage, she said.

The recording shows what appears to be a yearling moose sprinting away from a fast-moving garbage truck down a long stretch of the street. The truck doesn’t appear to meaningfully slow during the 15-second recorded encounter, until the truck rapidly approaches a stop sign and the moose careens out of the way up a snow berm. The video ends with the truck stopped and the moose walking away around the corner.

The poster on Nextdoor asked: “Who taught this driver that this was okay?? I called Northern Waste and sent this video to them, they were not happy.”

The post generated close to 300 comments, many expressing anger with the driver and sympathy for the moose.

Cory Stantorf, Anchorage-area wildlife biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, said the agency is in the early stages of collecting facts about what transpired and is working with Alaska Wildlife Troopers. He said wildlife authorities would also work with Northern Waste after the company contacted the agency over the weekend.

Stantorf said it’s against Alaska law to “harass or unnaturally change an animal’s behavior.” He said any potential violation for the driver would be determined by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers.

Jost with Northern Waste declined to release the driver’s name.

“The Alaska Wildlife Troopers are aware of the video and are investigating to determine if any Alaska laws or regulations were violated,” troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel said in an email.

“At this time, no citations have been issued,” McDaniel said. “The Alaska Wildlife Troopers would like to remind Alaskans that moose may aggressively defend low snow spaces they occupy during this record-setting snow season and to not approach a moose on a plowed sidewalk or trail unless it’s clear the animal has moved far off.”

McDaniel said troopers declined to “cite a statute or regulation that was potentially violated until Troopers determine if one was actually violated and a citation is issued or an arrest is made.”

Northern Waste, founded in 2017 by two Alaskans, spoke with the state agencies about the incident Tuesday, Jost said. Training for drivers is being scheduled with Fish and Game within the next week, she said.

“We’ve not had to deal with this type of thing ever,” Jost said. “We are going to communicate and participate in any way that’s required.”

Jost emphasized that members of the public should call her with any questions at 907-522-0122. She said she fielded about 10 such calls over the New Year’s weekend, after including her contact information in social media posts over the weekend that outlined the company’s response.

“We appreciate that everyone brought this to our attention,” she said.

Truck parking issue ‘circling the lot’ in DC as some states pick up the reins

A lack of adequate, safe truck parking hangs over the trucking industry like a dark, rain-soaked cloud that just won’t give way to sunny skies.

The issue has made its way to Washington many times over the years, but now federal legislation is finally beginning to move — albeit at a slow pace.

At the time of this writing in mid-December, Dave Heller, senior vice president of safety and government affairs for the Truckload Carriers Association, said he had been in and out of numerous meetings about the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act (TPSIA).

“Our membership had tremendous success seeking co-sponsors during our Call on Washington event at the end of September. However, the bill itself still languishes, looking for a much larger piece of legislation to attach itself to,” he said.

Heller says he believes 2024 could be the year something is finally done to help.

“As the list of co-sponsors in the Senate continues to grow, the need for this legislation will only grow with it,” he said.

Meanwhile, he says, the trucking industry must continue to send this message to the nation: There simply are not enough parking spaces for big rigs.

“That is why it is paramount that we engage on this issue, citing the effects that limited safe and secure parking has on our fleet to our elected officials at every level of government,” he said.

Trucking industry headlines over the past year have included dozens of reports about new truck parking spaces, so it would seem at least some effort is being made to provide a solution.

Major truck stop chains have added hundreds of spaces, and several states have renovated areas specifically for truck parking.

For example, the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) was awarded a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation in late 2023 to build hundreds of new truck parking spaces in southwest Wyoming.

WYDOT will receive more than $26.6 million through the 2023-2024 federal Rural Surface Transportation Grant, which will be used to build about 365 truck parking spaces along Interstate 80 in Evanston.

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has developed a statewide truck parking plan that recommends expanding parking at existing rest areas and adding three new facilities. ADOT’s plan is one of the more comprehensive solutions at the time of this writing.

After gathering feedback from the trucking industry, ADOT sought public input as transportation planners prepare to construct 842 truck parking spaces in 10 locations along interstates in areas with the greatest need for parking.

These locations are along Interstates 10, 40, and 8. In addition to expanded parking at existing rest areas, three proposed “safe lots” would provide parking for commercial trucks only.

ADOT recommends the additional parking be based on demand at existing rest areas and where undesignated truck parking occurs. Other factors include cost, ease of implementation, and input from the trucking industry.

Arizona’s sites prioritized for additional parking are:

The I-10 Burnt Wells Rest Area near Tonopah: 103 spaces
The I-40 Meteor Crater Rest Area near Winslow: 140 spaces
A new I-10/State Route 186 safe lot just west of Willcox: 127 spaces
I-40 Crazy Creek, a new safe lot about 35 miles east of Holbrook: 176 spaces
I-10 Ehrenberg Rest Area: 53 spaces
I-10 San Simon Rest Area: 80 spaces
I-10 Bouse Wash Rest Area: 55 spaces
I-40 Seligman, a new safe lot: 72 spaces
I-10 Sacaton Rest Area: 20 spaces
I-8 Mohawk Rest Area: 16 spaces

The plan recommends first adding parking to three critical locations — Burnt Wells, Meteor Crater, and a new safe lot near Willcox — based on the $32 million in funding currently available through the National Highway Freight Program. Parking at the additional seven locations could be added as ADOT seeks future funding. The additional parking would be in addition to current projects that are expanding parking at five rest areas, funded by the National Highway Freight Program.

While some states have begun to address the issue of closed or unusable rest/parking areas, there is still much work to be done.

In an effort to gain further data on the issue, Heller says TCA has started collecting information, allowing drivers to report closed rest areas that can be used for truck parking.

“Yes, they do exist,” he said of the closed rest areas. “Drivers have been reporting state, roads, and mile markers of those rest areas so we can highlight them in a manner that encourages the TPSIA to move more rapidly through the legislation process and make dedicated funding available that could be used to open these areas and provide more opportunities to locate safe and secure parking for our drivers that need it.”

Solar-Powered Truck Achieves World EV Altitude Record

Gebrüder Weiss, a European logistics company, recently announced that the company’s Peak Evolution Team has achieved a remarkable feat: setting a new world altitude record for EVs.

After going up the western ridge of Ojos del Salado, the highest active volcano on the planet, the team reached an astonishing height of 6,500 meters (about 21,000 feet) above sea level. What makes this achievement even more extraordinary is that their truck, powered only by solar energy, managed to conquer this unprecedented elevation. So, it’s not only the EV altitude record, but the solar car altitude record.

“This is a record not only for this technology, but for our years of research work and for the very future of mobility,” says Patrik Koller, CEO, and developer at Peak Evolution. “We hope that this success will attract more attention to alternative drives and their use in mining and other demanding transport tasks.”

Gebrüder Weiss, the team’s logistics partner and main sponsor, was a big part of the effort and not just a donor. Getting the vehicle safely to South America and keeping the team well-supplied was essential to the effort.

“As the oldest transport and logistics company, we are committed to the future of mobility,” says Frank Haas, Head of Corporate Brand Strategy & Communications at Gebrüder Weiss. “This success underlines our ongoing support for sustainable mobility projects and innovative technologies. We are delighted for the team and will now bring the record-breaking vehicle safely back to Switzerland.”

The endeavor started two months ago when GW transported the electric truck from Switzerland to Chile, via Rotterdam and sea freight. The solar truck was then transported overland to the Atacama region for the climb.

The journey started at the Maricunga Salt Lake, where the team took on smaller exploratory tours and acclimated to the mountain at an elevation of 3,400 meters. The formidable terrain and harsh environmental conditions of the world’s highest volcano not only tested the capabilities of their high-tech vehicle but also pushed the team members to their personal limits, both physically and mentally.

“Despite these extreme conditions, our specially developed vehicle managed to drive higher than any other e-vehicle – let alone a solar-powered one,” says Patrik Koller, CEO, and developer at Peak Evolution, summarizing the success. “We have been training for this moment for four years, so giving up was never an option.”

After weeks of struggle, the team of three adventurers achieved a significant milestone when they passed the 6,000-meter mark, setting a new record for e-vehicles. They kept going and just a week later, they pushed further and reached the maximum altitude of 6,500 meters above sea level.

This would be a remarkable feat for any EV, but they did it all on pure solar power. It may have actually been the only way for any EV to work out on the highest volcano on the planet, because there’s simply no plugs or stations out there.

After securing the world record, the Peak Evolution started the return journey to Switzerland. Gebrüder Weiss is now responsible for the safe transport of the record-breaking vehicle back to Europe.

The logistics company’s executives say they’re committed to supporting other visionary initiatives, and they have the receipts to prove it. In January, a dress rehearsal of the Austrian Space Forum’s Mars mission will be held at the Gebrüder Weiss site in Maria Lanzendorf near Vienna. On top of that, the company plans to conduct trials with an autonomous truck during 2024, and will dispatch an international research team to Greenland to gain valuable insights into climate change.

So, the company’s adventures are just beginning.

Why An Electric Truck Might Be The Best Vehicle For This Sort Of Challenge

One thing I’ve written about several times is the Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb, and how EVs are dominating the field.

It’s very common for the human body to experience illness when traveling to high altitude areas. The decrease in oxygen levels at elevations of eight, nine, and ten thousand feet can have a significant impact. Some people can’t handle it and have to go home.

Just like humans, cars with combustion engines rely on air to perform, and there’s a lot less of the stuff when you go that high. While cars may still be able to move, their efficiency and power are noticeably reduced compared to sea level or even at 5,000 feet. Because of this, annual racing events that challenge vehicles to ascend the steep road to Pike’s Peak, reaching an altitude of 14,110 feet, present a formidable test for any team. Even with turbochargers, getting the air-fuel mix and boost right as the air thins during the climb can be tough.

So, it shouldn’t surprise anybody that electric vehicles have a distinct advantage over the other cars in such uphill, high altitude races. After all, electric motors don’t require any air to operate, so they don’t lose power or stumble as they propel a vehicle into the thinner and thinner air. Heck, they can even work on the moon, where there’s no air at all.

Electric cars also have other advantages when racing at high altitudes. Electric motors can generate a lot of torque, which helps the car to quickly accelerate and reach higher speeds on hills, and then have more precise control of speed on the downhill segments due to regen.

People have been experimenting with EVs at Pike’s for decades, and by the 2010s were taking home trophies. The Volkswagen I.D. R electric car took the overall victory in the 2018 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, and it set a new course record of 7 minutes and 57 seconds. That’s more than 16 seconds faster than the previous record set by Sebastien Loeb in 2013!

What made this trip particularly challenging was how long it had to go, and in an environment with no EV charging infrastructure of any kind. To get up the hill, the team had to bring their own power along, and since the goal was to do it without fossil fuels, solar was about the only option available.

911 call documents discovery of man stuck in truck for 6 days

PORTAGE, Ind. (CBS) -- Matt Reum survived nearly a week in the wild on nothing but rainwater, as he was trapped for six days in a wrecked truck in Northwest Indiana.

CBS 2's Lauren Victory got her hands on the 911 call made by one of the two fishermen who found the crash victim.

As they explained at a news conference on Tuesday, Mario Garcia and his son-in-law Nivardo Delatorre, were walking along Salt Creek near Portage, Indiana, in search of a good fishing spot Tuesday afternoon. But something shiny caught their attention – and it turned out to be a mangled truck.

Garcia said he moved the white airbag in the cab of the truck and went to touch what he thought was the driver's dead body. But the driver turned around, and began speaking.

"It almost killed me there, because it was kind of shocking," Garcia said Tuesday night, "but he was alive, and he was very happy to see us. Like he was really like, I've never seen a relief like that."

Man recovering after being trapped in mangled truck for six days

The astonishment could be heard in Delatorre's voice as made the 911 call.

"Hey sir. I'm, I'm here at… let's see, a fishing hole right off of the expressway here," Delatorre told a 911 operator. "I can't really - I don't know the address, but there's a car that's been here since Wednesday, and there is a person inside of it. He's still alive too."

The fishermen could not believe this all happened as they went out on a leisurely mission to find a fishing spot.

"Dude, that's crazy," Delatorre said in the 911 call. "I came down here to check for fishing and he's down here in the car."

While Reum was alive, he was in shock.

"You guys might need the jaws of life to open the doors," Delatorre told the 911 operator. "His truck is pretty wrecked."

On the call, Delatorre was heard yelling to the victim while on the phone.

"They're on their way, buddy!" Delatorre was heard saying. "They're on their way!"

As Delatorre predicted, rescue crews did have to bring in the jaws of life to get Reum, 27, out of the truck. The vehicle had gone off Interstate 94 and had rolled underneath a bridge back on Wednesday, Dec. 20.

Reum spent six days – including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day – trapped in the wrecked truck out in the elements before someone found him. We are told Reum couldn't call for help because his cellphone was just out of reach.

On Wednesday, friends posted a picture of Reum smiling and giving a thumbs-up from his hospital bed. They have started an online fundraiser for Reum – a welder and a member of the member of Boilermakers Local 374 who lives in Mishawaka, Indiana, near South Bend.

Multiple sources described him as kind, respectful man.

We are told that as of Wednesday, Reum was awake and able to speak.

Reum told the fishermen who rescued him that he survived off rainwater. CBS 2 tapped two independent medical experts to understand more about the odds of surviving so long in the elements while trapped – with only rainwater to drink.

"This man was very, very lucky," said Dr. Dr. Emily Jameyfield of the University of Chicago Medicine emergency department.

The experts explained that people can't survive very long without water.

"You can survive weeks to months without food – without solid food - but you can only go a handful of days, if even, without water," said Jameyfield.

"People can survive longer without food than they can without water," said Dr. Evelyn Huang, an emergency medicine physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, "the reason being is that there are stores of energy inside of our body that can replace food, but water is really hard to access and really hard to store."

Victory asked Huang to explain in junior-high biology terms why the body needs water.

"Water is essential to life," Huang said. "It's essential to all most mammal lives."

As the Mayo Clinic explains, water amounts to 60 percent of a human being's body weight.

It is needed for multiple functions that are necessary for survival – including regulating body temperature; moistening tissue in the eyes, nose, and mouth; protecting internal organs and tissues; carrying oxygen and nutrients to cells; keeping joints lubricated; flushing out waste products and lessening the burden on the kidneys and liver; and dissolving minerals and nutrients so the body can access them, the Mayo Clinic explained.

Doctors amputated Reum's left leg at mid-shin earlier Wednesday. Friends said Reum broke several bones, and will need some time to recover physically and mentally.

He remained in critical condition as of early Wednesday evening.

Late Wednesday, Reum released a statement through a hospital spokesperson. He said he is requesting privacy while he heals – and he is grateful for all the support he has received.

Reum's friends said he needs a couple of days to process what happened before he reveals to the world how he survived.

Ruskin man faces DUI manslaughter charge in fatal tanker truck crash

One night in May, authorities say, Alvino Lamar Porter Senones went out for drinks. At some point, he received multiple text messages that warned him to be careful and to avoid drinking and driving, court records state.

It’s unclear if Senones got those messages. But early on the morning of May 6, authorities say, Senones was under the influence of alcohol when he got behind the wheel of his Kia Stinger and crashed into another car on U.S. 41 near Causeway Boulevard. While fleeing from the scene of that crash at speeds of more than 124 mph, records state, he slammed into the back of a fuel tanker truck.

The truck crashed into a utility pole and exploded, killing the driver, 49-year-old Randall Jerome Ervin.

Seven months later, Senones, 23, has been arrested on charges of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide in connection to Ervin’s death.

Senones’ arrest affidavit and search warrant affidavits filed in the case lay out the evidence that Florida Highway Patrol investigators collected to pursue charges against the Ruskin man.

Bank records, receipts and surveillance obtained by investigators showed Senones bought and drank alcohol at two bars in the hours leading up to the crash. Receipts showed he spent $50 at MacDinton’s Irish Pub in South Tampa and $224 at The Ritz in Ybor City.

Troopers also searched Senones’ phone records and found multiple outgoing text messages about locations where he was drinking alcohol. He also sent messages “regarding him entering the Kia and leaving an establishment at which he was consuming alcoholic beverages,” according to the arrest affidavit.

The phone records showed multiple incoming texts “pleading with Mr. Senones to be careful and not to get into trouble drinking and driving,” the arrest affidavit states. The affidavit does not say who sent those messages.

Senones was heading south on U.S. 41 around 2:40 a.m. that morning when he was involved in a crash with a Dodge Charger.

A witness said it appeared the Kia got into a crash with the Dodge north of Causeway Boulevard, then the Kia and the Dodge and a second Dodge Charger all stopped at a red light at the intersection with Causeway Boulevard. The witness said the driver of one of the Dodge vehicles began screaming at the Kia driver. The witness said he asked someone in his car to video record the incident.

The video shows the Kia had damage to its right rear side and its rear bumper was hanging off. The driver of one of the Dodge Chargers can be seen gesturing with his arm out the window toward the Kia and making inaudible comments. It shows a passenger in that Dodge getting out and approaching the Kia, and the Kia driver speeding off through the red traffic signal. The drivers of both Dodge Chargers followed.

Another video from the same witness shows the taillights of both Chargers as they headed south on U.S. 41. It shows one of the Dodge drivers braking, followed by a flash of light and an explosion.

Senones had crashed the Kia into the back of the tanker truck, records state. After the initial collision, the Kia lurched into an embankment, went airborne and landed on its roof among some brush.

The force of the collision caused the tanker to crash into an electrified utility pole. The trailer portion of the vehicle overturned and exploded, and the tractor was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Senones had burn marks from the Kia’s airbag on his face, torso and forearms. His mouth and both eyes were badly bruised, and he had cuts on his face and arms.

At Tampa General Hospital, staff took a sample of Senones’ blood. When he refused to volunteer the sample to authorities, police got a warrant for his blood work, records state. Investigators found his blood alcohol level had been measured at 0.218. Under Florida law, a driver is presumed to be impaired with levels of 0.08 or higher.

A data recorder in the Kia showed the vehicle was moving at or above 124 mph about five seconds before it struck the truck. The Kia’s engine throttle and gas pedal acceleration were at 100% one second before impact, and its anti-lock brakes didn’t engage in the moments leading up to the crash.

Troopers tracked down the driver of one of the Dodge Chargers, who said Senones had been involved in a hit-and-run crash with the driver and was trying to flee the scene when the second crash happened.

Records show Senones was released from a Hillsborough County jail on Thursday after posting $30,000 bail. He declined to comment Friday.

A native of Boston, Ervin graduated from high school in Alabama and served six years in the U.S. Navy before landing a job as a fuel tanker driver for Circle K, according to his obituary. The obituary said he was a father of three children who coached youth sports andhad a strong passion for the job he did.”

“He was a very determined person and worked very hard,” the obituary said.
