dallas, Texas — Dallas Animal Services (DAS) is urging the community to adopt or rescue large dogs as the shelter reaches critical capacity ahead of the July 4th holiday.
DAS is currently operating at 161% capacity for dogs, with 482 dogs sharing 300 kennels, according to a press release from the department. To alleviate the overcrowding, Friends of Dallas Animal Services, a 501(c)3 nonprofit partner, is offering $150 Amazon gift cards to the public for the next 150 dogs over 40 lbs. that leave the shelter.
"We had a heartbreaking meeting yesterday morning," said Mary Martin, Assistant Director. "We only have two empty kennels left, and we anticipate receiving hundreds of dogs in the coming week as dogs are scared out of their yards by fireworks. We're proud of our country and look forward to celebrating how far we've come as a nation, but the 4th of July is not a fun week in animal welfare. We have an incredibly sad week ahead of us and we're calling on the community to take that patriotic energy and use it to help us save lives. You will be our hero if you pick up a large dog this week."
Adopters of dogs over 40 lbs. will receive a $150 Amazon gift card via email once the pet has been in their home for two weeks. Approved rescues will receive their $150 gift card immediately upon picking up a dog over 40 lbs. "This is our way of saying thank you for your support and commitment to these animals," stated the source.
