Dallas is America’s most dog-obsessed city for renters, study says

Even dog obsession is bigger in Texas, and no one does it bigger than dallas.

Zillow researchers and dog-centric company BARK teamed up to find the top dog-obsessed city for renters in the United States. Dallas took the study’s top spot with 79% of its rental listings designated as dog-friendly.

Austin (77%) and San Antonio (75%) rounded out the top three. The national average was 55%, according to the study.

Golden and Labrador retrievers were the most popular dog breeds in Dallas. Bella and Charlie were the city’s most popular dog names.

Dallas' love for dogs was on full display in 2023's "Run for Retrievers" event at Reverchon Park. The race benefited the Dallas-Fort Worth Labrador Retriever Rescue Club.

Zillow data was determined by analyzing the share of pet-friendly rentals in the largest 25 U.S. cities by population size. BARK’s findings were compiled from 13 years of subscription data for its BarkBox and Super Chewer products, filtered by dog breed and dog name.

Pet ownership has jumped significantly in the past 30 years. As of 2024, 66% of U.S. households (86.9 million homes) own a pet, up from 56% in 1988, Forbes reports.

The average apartment price in Dallas-Fort Worth as of April 30 was $1,468, according to data from MRI ApartmentData.
