Grand Prairie school trustees pick new superintendent

grand prairie schools will be led by Jorge L. Arredondo, a longtime Texas educator.

The trustees on Monday unanimously approved Arredondo as the district’s next superintendent.

“This is a proud day for the Grand Prairie ISD,” trustee president Amber Moffitt said in a statement. “We are confident that Dr. Arredondo will continue the long legacy of great leadership in GPISD.”

Arredondo will take over the roughly 27,000-student district from retiring superintendent Linda Ellis. He’ll face ongoing efforts to boost students’ academics after pandemic disruptions, budget challenges facing public schools and political battles out of Austin.

Several districts across North Texas have seen turnover at the top in the years since COVID-19 upended public education.

Arredondo served stints as a teacher, assistant principal and principal. He previously led Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD and has spent more than two decades in public education.

“I am thankful to the board of trustees for this tremendous opportunity,” Arredondo said in a statement. “I’m eager to start working to fulfill the mission and vision of the Grand Prairie ISD.”
