Trailer hauling excavator towed by dump truck tips in I-94 crash

WEST FARGO, ND (KXNET) — The westbound I-94 Exit 346 on-ramp was closed for approximately an hour and a half this afternoon after a Sterling dump truck towing an excavator via trailer tipped over.

According to North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP), on May 8, at approximately 6:16 pm, a 31-year-old Minnesota man was driving a Sterling dump truck towing an excavator via trailer and left the road while accelerating on the on-ramp from Sheyenne Street to westbound I-94, entering the gore.

NDHP says the driver steered the vehicle back onto the road, but this caused the trailer to
tip onto its driver’s side.

Though the excavator remained attached to the trailer, the trailer separated from the dump truck. The dump truck came to a stop on the outside shoulder of the roadway while the trailer remained in the gore area.

The westbound I-94 Exit 346 on-ramp was closed during the crash investigation and clean-up. No charges have been filed, but the crash remains under investigation by the NDHP.
