VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Ind. (WOOD) — Indiana troopers say a tow truck driver from Sturgis was killed in a crash Thursday.
It happened around 9:40 a.m. in Indiana’s LaGrange County, at mile marker 114.2 on the Indiana Toll Road, according to the Indiana State Police.
Troopers say crews were on scene because of a previous crash, cleaning up a diesel spill and removing a semi-truck from the center median, as a Dodge Ram was heading east and towing an enclosed trailer.
The driver of the Dodge, a 31-year-old from New York, lost control, went through the median and sideswiped a tow truck that was parked on the inside shoulder of the westbound lanes, according to ISP. Then, the Dodge continued eastbound in the median, hitting the tow truck driver and the semi from the previous crash, troopers say.
The driver of the tow truck, 63-year-old Martin Troyer of Sturgis, died on scene, according to ISP.
Troopers say a worker who was cleaning up the diesel spill also suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
ISP says it believes speed was a factor: Roads were slick, and there had been multiple crashes because of snow. Troopers do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved.
