It’s time to see how the all-new 2024 Lexus GX 550 handles a large and heavy trailer. We take this GX 550 Luxury+ model and hitch up a premium ATC toy-hauler trailer that weighs around 7,200 lbs. Lexus recently uprated its new GX lineup to higher trailer ratings. The GX550 Overtrail models are rated to tow up to 9,000 lbs. This Luxury+ model is rated to tow between 7,600-7,800 lbs. Let’s see how it tows.

As always, big thanks to GenY Hitch and Complete Trailers for making this review possible.

The new GX is equipped with a twin-turbo 3.4L V6 that is rated at 349 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. It’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain and the fully-boxed frame under this SUV are related to the Toyota Tundra, Toyota Sequoia, and Lexus LX600.

When you need to slow down, the GX 550 has a built-in trailer brake controller. No need to turn to the aftermarket for this. However, the plastic hitch cover on the back requires a flathead screwdriver or tool to remove. The additional plastic surround makes it difficult to secure the hitch and safety chains. The surround can be easily removed to improve access.

The low-profile tires and 22-inch wheels are not great for pulling heavy trailers. We had about 40 psi in the rear tires (50 psi max). The tire sidewall was still squished by the weight of the trailer. I really want to test out the GX550 Overtrail with its all-terrain tires and a higher tow rating.

Overall ride quality with the trailer is still comfortable.
