WASHINGTON (May 3, 2024) – C-SPAN will visit Ben Barber Innovation Academy in mansfield, TX on May 8 at 1:15pm to celebrate and honor students for their winning entries in C-SPAN’s annual student video documentary competition, StudentCam. A C-SPAN and Spectrum representative will join the community in recognizing the following students at an assembly of classmates, teachers, and elected officials.

This year, C-SPAN and our cable partners celebrate the 20th anniversary of the StudentCam competition by asking students to address the theme, Looking Forward while Considering the Past. Middle and high school students could choose one of two prompts and produce a short documentary on that theme: In the next 20 years, what is the most important change that you would like to see in America? OR Over the past 20 years, what has been the most important change in America?

“In recognition of the 20th anniversary of C-SPAN’s StudentCam competition, this year we asked students to either look 20 years into the future or to reflect on a topic of importance to them and its past,” said Craig McAndrew, director of C-SPAN Education Relations. “Students have skillfully blended their perspectives with in-depth research and an array of expert interviews, and we are thrilled to share their accomplishments with their local communities, and the nation.”

C-SPAN is funded by America’s cable television companies as a commercial free public service, who also support StudentCam. In Mansfield and McKinney, C-SPAN is available locally through Spectrum.

“For two decades, StudentCam has provided a platform for students across the country to share their voice on issues important to them and their communities,” said Adam Falk, Senior Vice President of State Government Affairs for Spectrum. “Like this year’s winning students, Spectrum is committed to strengthening the cities and towns where we live and work, and we congratulate our local winners on their outstanding achievement in C-SPAN’s 2024 StudentCam competition.”

Now in its 20th year, over 3,200 students from across the country participated in the contest. C-SPAN received over 1,600 entries from 42 states and Washington, D.C. The most popular topics addressed were:

Artificial Intelligence, Technology and Social Media (18%)
Abortion, Health Care and Mental Health (17%)
Climate, Energy & Land Use and Pollution (13%)
School Safety, Gun Policy and Criminal Justice (11%)
Economy, School Funding and Homelessness (8%)

More than 300 students and 200 educators from across the country are winning a total of $150,000 – C-SPAN gifted an additional $50,000 in teacher prizes this year in honor of the 20th anniversary. C-SPAN is awarding one grand prize, 4 first prizes, 16 second prizes, 32 third prizes and 97 honorable mention prizes. These winning videos will receive cash awards of $5,000, $3,000, $1,500, $750 and $250, respectively. Over the course of two decades, over 63,000 students and 20,000 teachers have participated in the StudentCam competition, and C-SPAN has awarded over $1.5 million in prizes. You can watch all 150 winning videos from this year’s competition at StudentCam.org.

Pro-Palestinian protesters return to UT Dallas for prayer, urging change

More than 200 students and others gathered at the University of Texas at dallas just before Jummah — Friday prayer — as they continue efforts to urge school officials to divest from companies they say are contributing to the conflict in Gaza.

Ayman Taleb, who described himself as a preacher, acknowledged the students for their efforts to drive change despite threats of suspension or expulsion from school.

“We are inspired by you,” Taleb said. “We see that you know the risks. You know what your academic risks are, and the personal risks are, and you showed up anyway. That is to be admired, brothers and sisters.”

Police arrested 21, including students and faculty, on Wednesday as law enforcement dismantled an encampment set up overnight on campus. Nine of the 21 arrested Wednesday were not affiliated with the university, UTD officials wrote in a statement late Friday.

When they set up the tents and barriers made of tires, tables and other materials, police, state troopers and others arrived at the school to break down the encampment.

Those arrested face trespassing charges. However, late Friday, some cases reflected as being “closed,” according to online Collin County records. No other details were immediately available.

Speakers on Friday stated university officials sent out a notice mere minutes before law enforcement arrived. In between speakers and prayer on Friday, students and community members banged drums and chanted for takbir while the crowd responded with “Allahu Akbar!”

They shouted demands for divestment along with calling on school officials to reject threats against freedom of speech and to release a public statement calling for an immediate and permanent cease-fire in Gaza while denouncing “the ongoing genocide against Palestinians.”

Some speeches broadcast over a loud speaker were said to be from UTD students who were arrested this week. They told the crowd they were not allowed back on campus unless it was for class-related activities.

Fatima Ahmed, a UTD student and an organizer with the campus chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, said it’s telling that school officials allowed for state troopers to arrest students and staff rather than pull funds from investments.

”UTD does not care about their students. They do not care about their people. They do not care about their professors,” Ahmed said to a crowd. “All they care about is money. … This is our money that’s going into these companies, and until our university meets our demands we’re going to be out here.”

University officials said a statement that the Wednesday demonstrators violated rules against “constructing any type of temporary object or exhibit without prior approval from the university.” Officials noted that as more people joined that protest, the encampment moved onto walkways.

The protesters were handed a letter that day asking to remove barriers and structures.

“It was only after they refused to do so — and being fully aware of the consequences of that refusal — that UT Dallas and local and state law enforcement entered the area,” officials wrote in a statement. “We will continue to support and safeguard the free speech and assembly rights of everyone on our campus provided they follow campus policies.”

At Friday’s event, only a handful of campus police officers were on hand during the gathering, the only visible law enforcement presence.

One counterprotester holding an Israel flag could be seen walking along the outskirts.

Others at the university tried to move around the crowd as it was business as usual for them. With graduation nearing, a few students wore bright orange sashes — the school’s colors — and posed for photos in the afternoon.

Last week, UTD students held a sit-in at the university’s administration building as well as other protests recently.

UTD said Friday’s demonstration continued without incident and that demonstrators “followed university rules governing speech, expression and assembly.”

University President Richard C. Benson previously met with some student organizers on April 26. Students handed him a letter and left without further discussion, school officials said. The president had plans to meet with representatives from Jewish student groups as well.

Protests have been ongoing nationwide since Oct. 7 when Hamas-led militants stormed into Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking around 250 people hostage, according to Israeli officials. In the months following, Israel has bombed the Gaza Strip, and the Palestinian death toll from the war has surged passed 34,000, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza. The Dallas Morning News cannot independently verify these numbers.

Hanan Hadian, a fourth-year UTD student, headed to the protest immediately after wrapping up a final exam on Friday.

Being far away from family in Rafah, a city in the southern Gaza Strip, Hadian said it’s important for her to support the pro-Palestinian movement locally.

It helps her feel connected to them when she feels so powerless.

She thinks about her family who worked as farmers growing olives, oranges, pears and other produce. Since Oct. 7, the 22-year-old said she’s lost an uncle, three young cousins and countless extended family members and friends.

“We shouldn’t be silenced because what’s happening is actually a genocide,” Hadian said.

Steak and Ale comeback in North Texas delayed

Steak and Ale was a casual dining chain known for its steaks, unlimited salad bar, beer, wine and Tudor-style decor.

dallas — The comeback plan to open a Steak and Ale restaurant in North Texas is no longer in the works -- for now.

Last year, the DFW-based restaurant chain Steak and Ale announced it would open its first location in grand prairie some time in 2024. But now those plans have been temporarily nixed, officials told WFAA Tuesday.

"Regardless of the strong headwinds, naysayers, and regulatory assaults on small business everywhere, we continue to persevere and plan to, once again, open our iconic brands in the greater DFW area when those winds begin to shift in our favor," restaurant officials said in a statement.

Steak and Ale was a casual dining chain known for its steaks, unlimited salad bar, beer, wine and Tudor-style decor.

The once-popular restaurant chain soared to some 200 locations at the height of its success in the 1980s. Following a long decline, it ceased operations in 2008 when its then-parent company filed for bankruptcy. The chain was founded by Norman Brinker, the same restauranteur who founded Chili's.

"We deeply appreciate the groundswell of support as well as the genuine and heartfelt affection most folks have for Bennigan’s, Bennigan’s On The Fly and Steak and Ale. The developers and franchise groups that we are working with continue to present building plans and layouts that we hope will be approved without further delay," restaurant officials said in a statement.

Video: Diesel vs Gas vs EV - Tesla Cybertruck Takes on the Ike Gauntlet World's Toughest Towing Test

How will the new Tesla Cybertruck do on the Ike GauntletTM – the world’s toughest towing test? We test it along side a new Ford F-150 V8 and a Ram HD 2500 diesel. Let’s find out!

Big thanks to our friends at Weigh Safe hitches for keeping us equipped and safe for all of our trailer towing and recovery needs. The Weigh Safe hitches are capable of towing trailers as heavy as 21,000 lbs. They are made of light-weight aluminum, and they have a built-in weight scale to help us balance the trailer load perfectly.

The Diesel

We are going to set the benchmark for this comparison with our 2022 Ram HD 2500 Cummins-powered truck. This is our project truck that we call “Trail Hound”. This truck’s powertrain is all stock. It’s a 6.7L turbo-diesel I6 with 370 hp @ 2,800 rpm and 850 lb-ft of torque @ 1,700 rpm. It’s using a Stellantis 6-speed 68RFE automatic transmission and a 3.73-to-1 rear axle ratio. The modified this truck with a BDS suspension lift, FOX shocks, 37-inch BFG KO2 tires, and AEV bumpers.

This Ram’s original payload capacity was 2,200 lbs, and the original tow rating was 20,000 lbs. These numbers are lower now after we made the suspension and tires modifications. However, we are confident that it can set a high benchmark on the Ike GauntletTM.

The Trailer

We are towing 8,800 lbs for this test. It’s a Big Tex flat deck trailer with our 1997 Ford Expedition on top. This Ford Expedition is a co-star in our new “Go Big… Again” video series.

The Gas V8

The gasoline-powered truck is a 2022 Ford F-150 that is equipped with a 5.0L Coyote V8. I picked a V8-powered truck so see how a traditional pickup truck performance on our mountain. Ford sells more EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 trucks, but the V8 is still part of the lineup.

This engine is rated at 400 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 410 lb-ft of torque @ 4,250 rpm. It’s mates to Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission that they co-developed with General Motors. This crew cab 4×4 truck has a 3.73-to-1 rear axle ratio. This truck is all stock. It’s rated at just over 1,700 lbs of payload and 10,400 lbs of towing.

The Electric One

This is our first chance to run the Tesla Cybertruck on the Ike GauntletTM. This is a dual-motor Foundation Series version of the truck. It has one motor at the front and one more at the rear for a combined output that is near 600 horsepower. Tesla rates it at 2,500 lbs of payload and 11,000 lbs of towing capacity. Let’s see how it does!

If you are searching for the best truck and trailer accessories, take a look at our friend Mr Truck’s store.

Texas plays it safe, removes Eovaldi after painful pitch

arlington, Texas -- Nathan Eovaldi pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings before leaving with groin tightness, Ezequiel Duran's two-out double was the first of three consecutive RBI hits in the second inning and the Texas Rangers beat the Washington Nationals 6-0 on Thursday.

Eovaldi (2-2) limited the Nationals to two hits and two walks while throwing 92 pitches -- 13 short of his season high. He struck out eight for the fourth time this year, his season high. He won for the first time since April 3 and for the first time in four home starts this year.

Jacob Latz, David Robertson and Jonathan Hernandez finished off the four-hit shutout, Texas' second this season.

The Rangers (17-15) won a second consecutive series, which the defending World Series champions had not done since winning the first two series of the season.

The Nationals (15-16) failed to move above .500 for the first time since July 1, 2021. Arriving in Texas after scoring 33 runs in a four-game sweep at Miami, the Nats scored two runs in three games.

Eovaldi said he felt the injury throwing a 94 mph fastball for strike one to Luis Garcia Jr. with one on in the sixth. He'll get an MRI on Friday.

"I went to throw it, and I kind of felt it," Eovaldi said. "The initial thoughts that went through my head were I can call out the training staff, then maybe get the two warmup throws just to kind of check it out and stuff, but they wanted to play it safe and take me out of the game."

"We'll see how it feels [Friday]. Just play it safe. Again just trying to be smart with this, not push it."

"He may need some rest," Rangers Manager Bruce Bochy said. "We'll take care of him and do what's right."

Duran's double was his second RBI of the season, first since opening day. He'd sat out the previous three games after going 6 for 38, dropping his batting average from a season-high .429 to .200.

Evan Carter and Marcus Semien followed with RBI singles off rookie Mitchell Parker (2-1), making his fourth major league start.

The Rangers added three runs in the eighth inning. Two scored on Travis Jankowski's single. Jankowski replaced Duran at DH in the sixth inning.

Parker gave up 3 runs and 6 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out five. He'd allowed three total runs in his previous three starts after being recalled from Class AAA Rochester on April 15 when Josiah Gray was placed on the injured list.

The two runs in a three-game series matched the Nats' franchise low, done three previous times.

"If you think hitting's easy, you're really mistaken about this game," Nationals Manager Dave Martinez said. "We've just got to keep going, keep grinding."

Texas' Josh Smith extended his on-base streak to a career-best 19 games with a second-inning walk.

Corey Seager, MVP of the Rangers' World Series victory last fall, continued to struggle at the plate. Seager went 0 for 4 and is 3 for 41 over his past 11 games, dropping his batting average from .301 to .219.

That Porsche Kanye West Gifted Bianca Censori? It Just Got Towed!

Kanye West gave Bianca Censori the gift that keeps on giving… Or, uh, taking, actually!

Back in March, the Vultures rapper excitedly showed off a rather extravagant purchase he seemingly made for his wife: a new Porsche! In snaps at the time, Bianca could be seen crawling behind the wheel of the luxurious silver whip at the dealership before sitting on Ye’s lap in the offices — apparently as he signed his name on the dotted line.

So, for over a month now, Bianca has been sitting pretty in her shiny new sports car. Love it! But on Wednesday, it was mysteriously yanked from her!

Related: Jeff Goldblum Says He Will NOT Give His Children Any Of His Millions!

According to multiple outlets, the 29-year-old pulled up to the Yeezy offices in El Lay on Wednesday and parked it outside before heading in. Minutes later, a big ol’ tow truck drove up and workers got out and loaded the thing up onto the back of the truck! Seriously!! See (below):

YIKES!!

Sooo what’s going on here?? Did she botch her parking job? No one mentioned anything about the thing being ticketed. Was it picked up for maintenance? Or does this have something to do with Kanye’s finances??

DailyMail.com reported back in January that the Saint Pablo rapper owes about a million bucks in unpaid business and property taxes! Thus, purchasing a Porsche that runs about $120,000 may not have been the best idea. But could he really be bleeding so much money he can’t make good on the car payments?? And he had to take back his gift to his wife?! If so, damn!!

As you may recall, last week, TMZ reported that Kanye has plans to launch a porn company of his own. And you know what they say — sex sells! But is he that in need of money, or was Bianca’s car being towed because of something completely unrelated? Let us know YOUR thoughts about what happened in the comments down below!

MRSS is a leading upfitter for the Roadside Service Industry and a strategic supplier to towing and emergency roadside service companies, including AAA, throughout the U.S.

BREA, Calif., May 02, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — via IBN — Mullen Automotive, Inc. (NASDAQ: MULN) (“Mullen” or the “Company”), an electric vehicle (“EV”) manufacturer, and its recently announced dealer partner, Pritchard EV (“Pritchard”), have joined with Mobile Road Service Solutions (“MRSS”) to debut the Mullen ONE, Class 1 EV cargo van roadside assistance vehicle upfit which is currently on display at the American Towman Showcase in Las Vegas, Nevada.

MRSS is a leading upfitter for the Roadside Service Industry and is a strategic supplier to towing and emergency roadside service companies throughout the U.S. including companies like AAA. The company has roots in the road service business reaching back nearly a decade, when one of the largest towing and emergency roadside service contractors in California began producing its own light service battery vans to more cost-effectively, safely and efficiently provide mobile battery and light road service for auto club members.

Pritchard EV, a national leader in the adoption of electric vehicles with commercial fleets, worked with MRSS to identify the Mullen ONE EV cargo van as their first joint offering for the roadside service market.

The Mullen ONE EV Cargo Van is the only Class 1 Cargo van available today. The Mullen ONE boasts 157 cubic feet of cargo space, 1,600 lbs. of payload and 110 miles of range.

“Previously MRSS’s flagship product was a Class One commercial van specifically designed for light duty service. Folks loved its maneuverability and economy; it was a top seller for us, particularly with our customer, AAA,” said David Biehl, National Sales Director of Mobile Road Service Solutions, LLC. “We work very closely with AAA and were excited to hear that Pritchard was adding Mullen to their product line, particularly when our customer is moving strongly into the EV arena. The Mullen allows us to continue to offer a smaller commercial van to those of our customers who preferred that size. We’re excited to show our first demo at the American Towman Show in Las Vegas.”

“Mobile roadside assistance is a great segment for our commercial EVs and partnering with Prichard and MRSS is a great opportunity within the space,” said David Michery, CEO and chairman of Mullen Automotive. “Today, both companies hit the ground running in Las Vegas with our Class 1 EV cargo van which is on display and receiving great feedback at the tradeshow. We look forward to success with both Pritchard and MRSS.”

Pritchard EV is committed to providing fleets with access to sustainable mobility solutions and developing new modes of distribution that meet fleets where they are. With a network of partners as well as in-house resources, Pritchard EV is uniquely positioned to help fleets address major pain points like logistics, financing and vehicle registration.

Crystal Window and Door Systems will construct an advanced manufacturing facility and regional corporate headquarters on 44 acres in mansfield. It’s along the city’s Innovation Corridor at the unique mushroom property north of Heritage Parkway and west of 287.

The manufacturing facility will be constructed in four phases. The first phase will consist of 650,000 square feet and result in an investment of $136 million. The project will create 504 new jobs. The headquarters will be built in the second phase, adding about 100 corporate jobs.

Crystal Window and Door Systems has been awarded a $3,150,000 Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) grant. Crystal Window & Door Systems was founded in 1990 and now has five manufacturing plants across the U.S.

Besides a burgeoning innovation community campus, the town will soon be home to a film production studio to be built on 72 acres of undeveloped land. In addition to a cluster of five studios, the $70-million project envisions restaurants, a hotel, and retail space.
